Initiative: "Thermomodernisation of the Public Elementary School building in Krogulcza Sucha with landscaping"

Description of the problem encountered: To date, the external walls of the building have been partially insulated, the ceiling and the windows and doors of the school have been replaced, but this is still not enough. From the energy records in our possession and measurements with a thermal imaging camera, it is currently clear that the greatest heat loss is through the foundations of the building and the rest of the uninsulated ceiling. In addition, there is no children's playground in the immediate area so there is a strong need to plant some trees and shrubs to beautify the school yard so that it can become a recreational area.
Activities:
- insulating the foundations and drying them, protecting the earth and above-ground parts with insulating agents, foil and polystyrene;
- organisation of citizens' meetings with experts on energy efficiency and environmental measures in everyday life;
- levelling the area behind the school, where a playground will be set up;
- planting the square with ornamental trees on which bird feeders will be hung.
Results: The main benefit of the implemented initiative is the improvement of the environment through reduced consumption of fuel materials. In addition, the aesthetics of the landscape will be improved by the tree planting. The fruits and flowers of the plants (rowan, dogwood) will provide food for the birds, which will also be fed by the children during the winter period. The direct participants - pupils and school users - will have better learning conditions, the school will pay lower energy bills and its image in the region will be improved.
The initiative "Thermomodernisation of the building of the Public Elementary School in Krogulcza Sucha together with land development" of the Association for the Development of the Villages of Krogulcza Sucha and Krogulcza Mokra is implemented under the project "Local ecological civic initiatives - together for the environment" of the Foundation for the Development of Polish Agriculture and financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
RESULTS OF PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
As part of the project, the 150 m2 ceiling of the Public Primary School in Krogulcza Sucha was insulated. The foundations of the school were also insulated.
In addition, the green area around the school was landscaped. Shrubs and trees were planted. The parents of the pupils prepared bird feeders and farmers in the area provided food. During the winter, pupils fed the animals.
The investment was accompanied by educational activities. A presentation entitled 'Everyday ecology' was prepared and shown during school classes, at the School Enterprise Academy and at scout troop meetings. Seventeen children from grades 0-3 and 14 from the Kindergarten Education Team took part in the activities. The presentation was also made available to other establishments: PSP in Orońsko, Orońsko Local Government Kindergarten and Orońsko Day Care Centre.
