Description of the LIFE Pilica project
Capacity building for the implementation of remedial measures, as indicated in the Vistula River Basin Management Plan, within the catchment area of the Pilica River is the main challenge posed by the LIFE Pilica Integrated Project. The anticipated end result is an improvement in the quality
and biodiversity of surface waters with particular reference to the Sulejów water reservoir.
The project entitled 'Implementation of the Water Management Plan in the Vistula River Basin on the example of the Pilica sub-basin', with the acronym IP LIFE PL Pilica Basin CTRL (abbreviated as LIFE Pilica) received funding from the European Commission under the LIFE Programme for the Environment and Climate Action, and thus joined the group of LIFE Integrated Water Projects carried out in the countries of the European Union.
The beneficiaries of the project are Państwowe Gospodarstwo Wodne Wody Polskie Regionalny Zarząd Gospodarki Wodnej w Warszawie (acting as the Coordinating Beneficiary), the European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Foundation for the Development of Polish Agriculture and FPP Enviro. The project is co-financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management
and Water Management.
Project objectives:
The overarching goal of the Project is to improve the quality and biodiversity of the waters of the Pilica River catchment area with particular reference to the Sulejów Reservoir, but also to improve the skills of agricultural advisors, farmers and students of agricultural schools in rational fertiliser management in the context of water protection
Actions alleviating the obstacles to the implementation of the PGW will be carried out under 6 themes and 22 actions directed at:
- support of TSUs in the management of water and wastewater management in rural areas through the development of applications for water and wastewater management and the provision of funding at the stage of documentation development and coordination of fundraising from national and foreign sources;
- increasing environmental awareness in the agricultural sector through a wide range of demonstration and education activities, including the establishment of demonstration farms;
- implementing demonstration investments using blue-green infrastructure (BZI)
and ecosystem biotechnologies to reduce area-based pollution, increase water retention and treat rainwater, - support measures to improve water retention in the landscape, and hydromorphological conditions of watercourses by providing funding at the stage of documentation development and coordinating fundraising from other sources,
- to build capacity for updating and implementing the PGW in the Vistula River Basin by developing communication paths between actors, training the staff of beneficiaries and stakeholders, assisting investors at the planning and implementation stage and involving NGOs and local communities.
planned activities implemented by the Foundation:
- Organise 11 2-day training sessions for 330 provincial agricultural advisors on rational fertiliser management in the context of water protection
- Conducting 11 seminars for district agricultural advisors
- Organisation of 22 seminars for farmers from 11 provinces, a total of 660 participants on rational fertiliser management in the context of water protection
- Conducting 11 study tours to sustainable model farms for 275 farmers
Other activities will be dedicated to teachers and students of agricultural schools:
- Substantive and technical preparation of educational materials in the form of multimedia (films, animations, didactic games, exercises) in the field of biodiversity conservation and good water quality. The educational materials will cover the following topics:
- Holding a 2-stage knowledge competition for agricultural school students on biodiversity conservation
- Organisation of a 2-day workshop for 50 teachers on new tools for teaching about biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes (thematic lectures, presentation of tools, discussions)
- Organisation of a 2-day workshop - Biodiversity conservation and water protection for 110 students.
- Conducting a one-day workshop - Investigating water quality at the farm and then repeating it periodically every year in the schools involved in the project.
- Conducting a one-day workshop - Creating fertiliser plans and then repeating it periodically every year in the schools involved in the project.
- Implementation of the LOCAL WATER MONITORING SYSTEM Programme in the schools involved in the project, carrying out research by the students and then funding the remediation plans created by the students.
We look forward to working with you!
